We are back with the answers from Lauren Sherman. Check out Lauren’s opinion on luxury, fashion and what she had in mind with her all-new fashion blog, The Fashion Beat.
1). Joel: The fashion world is harnessing the power of social media and the brands acknowledging the fashion bloggers to spread the word. Will the brands skip the glossy magazines to take their collections directly to customers? If yes, when do you see it happening to a major extent?
Lauren: Well, I think some glossy magazines will always exist because not everyone wants to play editor. Books like Purple, Lula and V possess such a distinct point of view and beautiful imagery that there will always be an audience for that. And more online-only pubs will appear. However, I do think more designers will follow McQueen’s/Victor & Rolf’s lead and stream the shows online.
2). Alex: Though there are some luxury brands like Burberry, Gucci, Dolce & Gabbana which have realized the power of online worlds, still the majority of them are shying away from the web. Your take?
Lauren: I just did a piece about this on Businessweek.com. Every industry insider I interviewed agreed that luxe brands need to expand their e-commerce offerings. Honestly, I think a lot of these brands are focusing too much on social media and skimping on e-commerce. Gucci is the exception—its recently announced deal with Christies is a great move. But do I think Hermes needs to be on Twitter? Not so sure about that.
3). Neil: The veteran bloggers believe the right time to start a new blog is gone. What motivated you to start one of your own now?
Lauren: Well, I always think there’s room for something new and different. There wasn’t a place on the internet–or in print, for that matter–that was looking at the business of fashion and retail from a consumer’s point of view. I’m not an insider–I’m a person who loves fashion and wants to explore how the business reflects our overall economy and society. Fashion blogs are either about personal style, gossip, regurgitated news or marketing tips. I love reading all of that, but I wanted to provide something that offered more of a critical eye.
4). Jean: Do you believe that micro-blogging could eventually lead to the death of blogging?
Lauren: Well, brevity is the soul of wit! No, I mean, people still have more to say than two sentences allow. At least sometimes.
5). Nick: The role of press in the blogging age. Your take?
Lauren: Do you mean the traditional press? I think traditional journalists must move online or they are, no doubt, irrelevant. In general, I think blogging will eventually force all journos to be more aggressive. When you’re not working for the man, you are free and in a way, more honest.
6). Keira: The year 2009 saw some of the big names in the print dying away. Which one came as the most shocking to you?
Lauren: Hmm. I don’t think any have shocked me, just made me sad. I had lots of friends a Portfolio, Fortune Small Business and Domino. I think over the last few years, the folding of Jane and Martha Stewart’s Blueprint bothered me the most, simply because I loved the content. I wish they both could have been brought online.
7). Nicole: What do you plan to achieve with your personal blog The Fashion Beat?/Where do you see it five years from now? Lauren: Right now, I just want to teach people something. If I can eventually hire a staff and do this full time, continuing to cover breaking news paired with elevated analysis, that would be great, too. 8). Team: Your views on BornRich and Instablogs network?
Lauren: It seems like you have a great passion for your site, and that’s the most important thing, right?
RapidFire Questions 1). Your favourite lifestyle brands a. Louis Vuitton b. Gucci c. Armani d. Versace e. Others?
Lauren: Maison Martin Margiela and Hermes.
2). When did you first fall in love with fashion?
Lauren: I can’t remember not being obsessed, even when I was very little. A Gap green paisley knit top and pants that my dad bought me when I was 7 probably cemented my fate. 3). Your most expensive fashion buys? Lauren: I don’t have a ton of super-pricey stuff because most of the brands I like to wear–Acne, Steven Alan, Apc–aren’t super over the top. However, I do have a Stella McCartney suit, a Lanvin x Acne dress and Karl Lagerfeld designed flats by Repetto.
4). What are the biggest fashion blunders according to you? Lauren: Honestly, I’m not a stylist, so I really try not to judge. But, if you’re over 15, I think Uggs are just absurd. I don’t care if Kate Moss wears them. I’d rather see someone in the street in a pair of fuzzy slippers than those wretched things.
5). What are you carrying in your handbag right now? Lauren: Passport, keys, iPhone, notepad, pen, Nars orgasm blush and Bobbi Brown lipstick in Brick Red. 6). Your favorite quote? Lauren: I don’t know exactly how it goes, but the Coco Chanel one that’s something like, “At some point in every woman’s life she must choose between her face or her ass.” So true! 7). Top Current Fashion Trends That Sucks a.) Leggings b.) tattoos c.) Big sunglasses d.) Capri Pants e.) Other?
Lauren: Hmm. I’m very much over the ripped jeans look. I love boyfriend style jeans, but not ones that are “artfully” ripped.
8). Three luxuries covered by you that you would love to own too? Lauren: Hermes Black leather birkin with gold hardware. Chanel 2.55 in navy (again with gold hardware). A gold vintage Rolex. (All classics that you can wear forever.) 9). Most stylish celebrity couple a. Brad Pitt & Angelina Jolie b. David & Victoria Beckham c. Justin Timberlake & Jessica Biel d. Tom Cruise & Katie Holmes e. Jay-Z & Beyonce?
Lauren: Jay Z and Beyonce. Though my favorite Hollywood couple of all time would have to be Winona Ryder and Johnny Depp, even though they’ve been broken up for years.
Finally, we thank Lauren for doing this interview with us, and we wish her “Best of Luck” for all her future endeavors!
